Well, I know it's been about a month since my last post. We were in the last few weeks of summer, and here we are into the first few weeks of school. Today is Labor Day, and while I'm not at work, I am home "alone" with 3 dogs, some form of a cold/flu, and more homework than I'll finish tonight. I made the mistake of taking all three dogs on a walk tonight (I am dogsitting, not completely insane), and everyone that I passed looked at me like I had lost my mind. By the time I got home, the dogs and I all thought I had lost it. Somewhere on that walk, I did. Wow, I'm going to need a back up plan for the next week.
Justin is in Minnesota with 4 of his closest friends on a week and a half fishing trip. While I gave him a hard time before he left (seriously, a week's vacation?? Not to mention, those kids were calling each other once a day!!), I am slightly jealous that he has such a close group of friends. I know that many fishing stories will be told and lots of laughter will come from it, but I already want him to be home. If nothing else, to run out and get me some soup. Haha. Where is my Meme when I need her? When Justin called last night, he said that they passed a midget cage fighting event being set up. That's right. I was tore up that he didn't stop especially since you could volunteer to fight a midget. Those Minnesota people sure are an odd bunch.
I guess I could recap my first 2 weeks of school, even though most of you know what happened. Not only is this my first year at Elementary, but this is a brand new school. We are all working things out, deciding how things will run, and learning something new every day. It's so nice because it's truly becoming ours. Years later, I can look back and be proud that I helped open a school. That being said, the first day was not without drama. A Kindergarten girl pooped in the 4th grade boys bathroom (don't ask), then she proceeded to smear the poop then eat it. As our team leader loves to say, "O....M....G." Yeah, it was that kind of day. We haven't had anything that eventful since, but what a way to start the year! I'm struggling a bit so far because I don't know how to teach someone to read, and most of my babies can't read. It's going to take a lot of practice and patience on my end, but I am loving it so far. The kids are so sweet and happy to be at school. A far cry from high schoolers (but I still miss those guys, too). I'm glad I made the change, and I feel a new energy. My other kid story comes from the mouth of one of my first graders. His spelling words this week included the word jam. He sounded it out, and then said, "What's jam?" I explained that it was like jelly. He said, "I know where jelly comes from. They kill jellyfish, and they get jelly." Me: "Really? How do you know that?" Student: "Look, I just know these things, ok?" Wow, how can you not believe that?
Well, I better get back to my homework. As it is, no one will volunteer to read my Research in Education textbook (3 worthless dogs), so I'm stuck with the task. Hope everyone is having a blessed first few weeks of school. Glad to be entering fall and of course...Aggie football!
